Introduction
San Francisco Lyric Opera is proud to present composer David Lang’s “the little match girl passion” at ODC Theater in San Francisco from March 23-25th, 2012. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and influenced by Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, the Pulitzer Prize-winning “the little match girl passion” has become one of the most heralded choral compositions of the new century since its riveting premiere at Carnegie Hall.
We are also thrilled to announce that Anastazia Louise of Bad Unkl Sista, a San Francisco performance art group was awarded our commission from a field of ten submissions to create costumes and choreography adding movement for the first time to this beautifully haunting music. Anastazia’s fusion of Butoh-style dance with western music promises to provide a striking and new dimension to the piece and reflects San Francisco Opera’s new mission to collaborate with other art forms to bring fresh, exciting new experiences to our audiences.
