San Francisco Lyric Opera is proud to present composer David Lang's "the little match girl passion" at ODC Theater in San Francisco, March 23-25th, 2012. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and influenced by Bach's St. Matthew Passion, the Pulitzer Prize-winning "the little match girl passion" has become one of the most heralded compositions of the new century since its premiere at Carnegie Hall.

We will be performing Mr. Lang's music as it was originally conceived: with a quartet of four soloists, doubling as percussionists throughout. We are delighted to announce that Ann Moss - soprano, Celeste Winant - alto, Eric Maggay Tuan - tenor, and Eugene Brancoveanu - bass-baritone will be performing in this production. Barnaby Palmer will be conducting the performance.

We are also thrilled to announce that Anastazia Louise of Bad Unkl Sista, a San Francisco performance art group was awarded San Francisco Lyric Opera's commission from a field of ten submissions to create costumes and choreography adding movement to this beautifully haunting music. Anastazia's fusion of Butoh-style dance with Western music promises to provide a striking and new dimension to the piece and reflects San Francisco Lyric Opera's new mission to collaborate with other art forms to bring fresh, exciting new experiences to our audiences. Chip Grant, Artistic Director of Urban Opera, is directing this production.
